ーDo You Know What a “Stoma” Is?
A stoma (colostomy or urostomy) is not something you’re born with—it’s created through surgery following illness or accident. For those who need it, it represents life itself and the freedom to enjoy dining out and social activities with confidence.
It’s a choice—a choice to live.
Medical professionals support patients before and after surgery, helping them adjust to life with a stoma and addressing their concerns with compassion. Within hospital walls, ostomates (people living with stomas) are accepted as part of everyday life.
Yet ostomates are also members of our communities. They walk our streets, meet friends, share meals with loved ones—living the same daily lives we all cherish. But to maintain this “ordinary” existence,
many quietly battle inconvenience and sometimes even prejudice.
Has our society truly become a comfortable place for ostomates to live?
When clothed, ostomates often blend in invisibly. We walk past them daily,
forgetting we share this world together. Many believe “there are no ostomates around me”
—or worse, harbor prejudices about stomas they’ve never even seen.
The truth is, anyone could suddenly become an ostomate through illness or accident.
Ironically, those who held the strongest prejudices often struggle most to accept
this life-saving choice when it becomes their own reality.
Rather than blame individuals for this sad reality, we believe the answer lies in
“changing the society that created these prejudices.”
This project proposes total fashion coordination designed around beautifully
crafted stoma covers—a complete style that only ostomates can wear.
Our goals are twofold: To enrich the lives and spirits of ostomates,
and to help society recognize ostomates as fellow community members.
But this project extends beyond ostomates. It’s a message of hope for everyone
who hides in the shadows, worried about prejudice—and for all of us
who may become future ostomates ourselves. It’s about affirming
our right to be ourselves.
Toward a world where ostomates who’ve chosen to live with their
new bodies can hum happily while picking out their clothes
and celebrating everyday life—
Toward a world where everyone can enjoy fashion.
